Wanda Gard was born on September 24, 1939, in Glencoe, Oklahoma. She was the oldest child of Kenneth and Emma Anderson and the sister of Carol McKee and the late Betty Hinkley.

When Wanda was in grade school, her father who was serving during WWII was captured and taken to a POW Camp. Her family was told that he had died. My mom felt like her dad was alive and continually prayed for him. He was liberated by Russian Calvery on his birthday. Two months later he walked in the back door and surprised the family.

Our mom’s best friend was her sister, Betty. One of her favorite childhood memories was skating with her sister who fell and broke her arm. Our mom carried Betty all the way home while assuring her that she would be ok.

While attending Ponca City High School, she enjoyed taking art classes. Wanda excelled in drawing and painting. Throughout her life she crafted, quilted, and crocheted.

During her senior year she met her husband, the late Jerry Gard of Tonkawa. After graduating and marrying our dad, she completed Cosmetology school at Ponca City Beauty College. Mom really loved kids and babysat in her home for many years. She also was an Assistant Girl Scout leader and helped with Girl Scout Day Camp.

If asked, Wanda would proudly share that her favorite accomplishment was being a mom and nana. She is survived by her seven children: Steve and Shelly Gard, Chris and Denise (Gard) Baldwin, David Gard, Bruce and Jana Gard; fourteen grandkids: Kamron, Kody, Natalie and Joe, Katelynne and Jesse, Kyle and Kaitlynn, Chelsie, Clint, Clayton, Lauren, Mackenzie, and Courtney; and eleven great grandkids: Hope, Amelia, Lynnen, Grayden, Jaxten, Piper, Fletcher, Corwin, Nathaniel, Jackson, and Oliver. She also had two pets: Kitty Girl and her fish, Pretty Boy.

Our mom played board games and cards with us when we were little. She had hot chocolate ready for us after school on cold days. Mom loved reading and read us stories, books, and nursery rhymes growing up. As a daughter, I was taught jacks, jumprope, sewing, embroidering, and skills that helped me become the mom and grandma I am today.

Our mom, Wanda Anderson Gard, was a survivor, a prayer partner, a devoted sister, a nurturing nana, and a child of God. As of July 31, 2022, she became a permanent resident in heaven. Someday we will see her again. If you get to heaven before us, tell her we said hi!
