Max Allen Wirtz of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died early Monday morning, December 2, 2019, in the Blackwell Regional Hospital at the age of 84 years.

Max Allen Wirtz was born on August 14, 1935, in Blackwell to Harve Emil and Lavina Elizabeth Marie (Koenig) Wirtz. He attended Wad-dell and Lost Creek School before transferring to Blackwell Public Schools where he attended Lovett Junior High and Blackwell High School graduating in 1953.He married Donna Gene Overbey on June 13, 1954, in Blackwell. He worked at various jobs in the area before owning and operating the Cities Service Gas Station and Ice House. He later worked for Williams Natural Gas as a corrosion technologist and retired in 1996. Following retirement he opened Lock-n-Clock and operated the business for several years. He served on the City Council for over ten years and later served as mayor until ill health forced his retirement. He was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church and served on the Kay County Sheriff’s Reserve. He was a member of the 45th Infantry of the National Guard and United States Army Reserve and was honorable discharged in 1963. He enjoyed working on locks and clocks and restoring antique and classic cars.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Donna Wirtz of Blackwell; two daughters, Becky Muret and fiancé Vernon Roth Jr. of Kirwin, Kansas, and Cindy Lawrence and husband Jim of Blackwell; a sister, Betty Campbell of Blackwell; a brother, Eugene Wirtz of Ponca City; four grandchildren, Dan Muret and wife Tonja of Cooper, Texas, Brian Muret and wife Channa of Blackwell, Kyle Muret and wife Jennifer of Stillwater, and Drew Wirtz of Blackwell; and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 5th in the St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Mozeik officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Serving as casketbearers will be Drew Wirtz, Dan Muret, Kyle Muret, Brian Muret, Larry Bennett and Jim Lawrence. Honorary casket-bearers will be Raymond Thiele, Keenan Garrett, Bob Atkins, Kendal Muret, Tyler Muret and Andrew Muret.

A memorial has been established in his honor with “The Lutheran Hour” in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
