On October 27, 1959, Marcia Kay Dunn Engle “The Cake Lady” was born to Donald “Pete” Dunn and Donna Dunn. She has one older sister, Teri, one younger sister, Dolly, and one younger brother, Doug. Her first recorded smile was at 3 weeks old. She was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church at 8 weeks old, on Dec. 29, 1959. She received her First Holy Communion on May 7, 1967 at the age of 8. She received the sacrament of Confirmation on Nov. 5, 1967 at the age of 9.

As a child, she was playful, sensitive to other’s feelings, and creative. She said her highest scores were always in English as she developed a love of reading. She attended primary Catholic school at St. Francis in Newkirk. She claimed her beautiful penmanship was from trying to please Sister Juliana, Sister Clare and Sister Helen. In her high school years she attended Newkirk High School. She spent time marching with the band as the baton twirler. She attended her junior and senior year at PO-Hi where she continued to make new friends and be involved in school activities. She also developed a love of music and dancing and would go on to sing at weddings in her youth and liked attending dances. She achieved an Associate’s degree in fashion and merchandizing from Northern Oklahoma College where she took up the art of sewing. She perfected that skill making hundreds of pieces of clothing and costumes over her lifetime. She also played the classical guitar and sang in a band, earned high marks in her classes, and became a social butterfly.

At the age of 12, Marcia began her lifelong romance with Randy. He was 14. They dated for years and set a date to marry after Marcia finished college. They were united in Holy Matrimony at St. Mary’s Church on June 1, 1979. Marcia was a radiant 19-year-old bride. The couple moved to Peckham, OK and made their home there.

Marcia and Randy greeted their first child, a daughter, Eve, on April 2, 1980. Eve was spoiled with love and attention. The couple moved to Ponca City, OK shortly after, and would remain in the area. The couple anxiously awaited a second child. Miranda was born on April 28, 1986. She was lost at full term due to stillbirth. Marcia and Randy’s hearts were torn by the tragedy of losing their beloved child.

The couple was anxious, excited and hopeful when they found themselves expecting a third child just a few months later. Their third child, a son, Ace, was born April 13, 1987. He was adored and cherished by his parents. Marcia’s pride and joy were her children. No mother had ever thought so highly of her children. She was the homeroom mother for both kids and attended every school field trip.

Marcia held several jobs. She worked for Charlie Ryan’s Taco Stop, Spray’s Jewelry, Eastman National Bank, St. Mary’s School cafeteria, St. Mary’s Daycare, ran a balloon business for a friend, cooked for Camp McFadden, she owned a doughnut shop and bakery, and taught Cake Decorating and Pastry Arts at the votech. She was a renowned cake artist and catered weddings for 41 years. She loved baking and described it as edible 3D art.

In 2001, she went back to college, this time to OSU. She took metal and silversmithing. When she wasn’t baking or sewing or gardening, she could be found making jewelry. She entered her wearable art in many county fairs and gave a lot away to friends.

In 2002, Marcia and Randy greeted the first of 8 grandchildren. Ema, Aubrey, Zachary, Axtyn, Adeline, Ana, Ela, and Austyn were Marcia’s biggest bragging point. She would show everyone pictures of her grandbabies and was constantly asking for new pictures. Marcia wanted to be at every birth so she could be one of the first people to welcome her grandchildren into the world.

Marcia was a strong woman of faith. She was a believer of the Gospel and she always trusted in the Merciful Heart of Jesus. She gave generously to her church family and to the broader community. She took seriously Jesus’ words “don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing”. There could never be a tally of all the gifts, money and support she gave with a loving heart. She gave to family, friends, and strangers alike.

Marcia had strong opinions and was never afraid to speak her mind. She was also so soft hearted that she was always ready to make amends if she hurt anyone’s feelings. Making and keeping close ties to family and friends was always her priority. Her concern for people and their needs was evident in her prayer life.

Marcia’s pet-peeves were un-washed hands before touching or being near food, hair that fell in front of her eyes, and getting used to new vehicles or cell phones.

She loved George Strait, dark chocolate, arts and crafts, visiting people, and trying new recipes. She enjoyed traveling and making new memories. She tried to attend as many of her grandkids sporting events as possible.

The Rosary will be recited at 6pm Friday, Feb. 28, 2020 in the Chapel at Trout Funeral Home. A Memorial Mass will held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 2pm on Saturday, February the 29th. Marcia will be laid to rest privately at the Newkirk Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Ponca City Arts Association, 400 E.
