Longtime Ponca City resident, (Bertha) Marcellene Boyd Coons, celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at the Renaissance Partners at Ponca City, on October 5, 2019. Marcellene departed this mortal world on February 18, 2020. She was born October 5, 1919, in Raywood, Texas, after her family’s ten days of traveling by Model ‘T’ from Louisiana, Missouri for an extended stay with relatives.

Marcellene was the youngest of four children raised near Louisiana, Missouri, on a Buffalo Valley farm by parents Herbert C. and Anne Ermyl (Parker) Boyd. Graduating first from Buffalo Elementary without a tardy or absence then Louisiana High School with the class of 1937, Marcellene worked locally before attending Gem City Business College in Quincy, Illinois. After finishing college, she moved to Springfield, Illinois, and worked in the Lincoln Ordinance Plant.

While in Quiincy, she met her future husband, Arthur E. Coons, at a church social during his stay at nearby Camp Ellis. At the conclusion of World War II, Marcellene And Art renewed their acquaintance and married in Springfield, IL, at the First Methodist Church, March 2, 1946, moving then to Stillwater, OK. Children, Duncan and Marcia, were born while Art finished an accounting degree at Oklahoma A & M College. The family moved to Ponca in 1951 where Art went to work for Conoco. Brothers, Dale and Bill, were added to the family as Marcellene was a resourceful housewife making use of her strong work ethic and organizational skills. She transported family members to different schools and Art to work each day. Marcellene was constantly performing house remodeling, doing sewing projects, handling household finances and giving loving support to her children. In addition, she found time to be an active band booster, a member of the Morning Glories bowling league, act as league secretary, build woodworking projects, serve on the local election board, and was a talented artist and painter. After Art passed Marcellene continued to mow her lawn through age 92. Family and friends were always in awe of her thoughtfulness and compassion for others.
