JoAnn Haney, a long time resident of Ponca City and formerly of Newkirk, died Tuesday Feb. 18, 2020 in her home at Via Christi Village. She was 94.

The oldest daughter of Harry and Frances Bain, JoAnn was born on Nov. 5, 1925 in a rural area outside of Newkirk on a farm now covered by Kaw Lake.

A proud graduate of the class of 1944 from Newkirk High School, JoAnn married Donald “Jack” Haney while he was home on leave from the Navy on May 12, 1946. The two began a love story that would take them around the world including stops in San Francisco, Boston, San Diego and St. Louis. After Jack’s retirement they returned to Newkirk in the 1980’s and built their dream home. JoAnn kept busy with her membership and volunteer roles at the First Christian Church and she was an active and lifelong member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW.

JoAnn was an avid gardener her entire life and always looked forward to planting flowers in the spring that could be enjoyed all summer long. The Haney’s would often be found in their travel trailer on weekends in California and later spent winters on Padre Island in Texas. JoAnn enjoyed entertaining family and friends and especially enjoyed decorating and cooking during the holidays.

Jack and JoAnn were married for 61 years before his death in 2007. JoAnn is also preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Dan Bain, Margaret Bain and Beverly Purvis (Bain). She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

JoAnn’s work here is done and next on her infamous “TO DO” list is to reunite with her beloved Jack, her family and many friends. Those of us left here will raise a vodka martini in her honor knowing that she is smiling down on usfinally home.

A graveside service will be held at 3pm Friday, Feb. 21 in the Newkirk Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Wilburn, Chaplin with Humanity Hospice officiating. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you remember JoAnn with a donation to the VFW Post 1201, PO Box 1836, Ponca City, OK 74602.
