Jean Marie Snyder Barger of Ponca City, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2023, at the age of 96.

Jean was born on November 29, 1926, in Winfield, Kansas, to Ralph D. and Omeda Boatman Snyder. Jean grew up in Winfield, Kansas, and graduated from Winfield High School in 1944. During her senior year, her family moved to Cedar Vale, Kansas, and she lived with her grandmother in Winfield during that year and commuted to the family home in Cedar Vale on weekends. After high school, she worked for a year, then attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas.

On January 26, 1947, she married Harold L. ‘Hal’ Barger, and together they raised six children, Sheryl, Sandra, Bruce, Beverly, Judith, and Tracia. A lifelong member of the Methodist church, Jean was active at First United Methodist in Ponca City where she taught Mother’s Day Out and volunteered in the nursery for many years. Jean was an avid tennis fan, player, and instructor. Together with Tennis Hall of Fame member Earl H. Buchholz, she created a youth tennis program in Ponca City in 1961. Jean coordinated Mr. Buchholz’s lessons, and when he retired, she continued the program and instruction until 1997. In 1974, she went to work at Conoco Oil Company and retired from the accounting department there in 1994. For a few years, Jean also taught a knot-tying portion for a sailing class held at Northern Oklahoma College.

Besides her passion for tennis, Jean had many interests and hobbies, including reading, genealogy, gardening, music, and dancing. She also was proficient in sewing, embroidery, knitting, and crocheting. She loved making gifts for her family and friends. Above all, her greatest joy was her love for her family, family gatherings, reunions, and family genealogy. She loved horseback riding and working alongside her beloved father, Ralph Snyder. She took every opportunity to ride horses with him, going with him to check on cattle at the feedlots and in the pastures all her life.

Jean is survived by her son, Steven ‘Bruce’ Barger; her daughters Sheryl ‘Sherry’ (Lyle ‘Corky’) Barnett, Beverly, ‘Bev’ Barger, Judith ‘Judy’ (Jim) Ferguson, and Tracia ‘Tracy’ Croley; her brother Paul (Myrna) Snyder; and six grandchildren, Ashley (Philip) Kauders, Caitlin (Riki) Pfeffer, Denali Lowe, Kelly (John) Guinn, Clay (Taylor) Ferguson and Krista (Luke) Allen, seven great-grandchildren, 15 nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Sandra ‘Sandy’ Lowe; parents, Ralph and Omeda Snyder; grandparents Bert and Bertha Snyder and Alice and Oscar Boatman; sisters Irene Kennedy and Susan Snyder; brothers, Keith Snyder, Blaine Snyder, Lloyd Snyder, and one niece and one nephew.

The family would like to thank Ponca City Nursing, especially the nurses and staff on the memory care wing, and a heartfelt thanks to Hospice of North Central for their loving attention and care to Mother.

The family will have a private graveside service at Highland Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield on Friday, May 19, from 4 to 6 P.M. The family will greet friends during this time.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma 445 Fairview, Ponca City, Oklahoma 74601. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
