Eugene Paul Kubik, longtime Newkirk area resident and cattleman, died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 26, 2019 at the Kansas Veterans Home, Winfield. He was 92.

The son of Paul Dewey and Mary Jane (Fulton) Kubik, Eugene was born Dec. 2, 1926 at Jefferson, Okla. He grew up and received his education in Jefferson. In the early 1940’s the family moved to the Hardy area, and Gene worked for area ranchers.

On April 24, 1946 Gene entered into active service with the United States Army.

He served in Korea at the end of WWII. With the occupational specialty of carpenter, he met military qualifications of Expert caliber .30 M-1 Rifle. As a Private First Class serving with Company E 20th Infantry, he received his Honorable Discharge May 14, 1947. Gene returned to Hardy and ranching after the service. In the 1960’s he and his brother Lynn started a cow/calf operation, forming Kubik Bros.

Gene had a caring heart.

He took care of his grandmother when she couldn’t do it her self, and he gave care and attention to two handicapped children in the area.

Gene enjoyed working and being in the out of doors.

An even tempered man with high integrity and excellent work ethics, he was well thought of by others.

Gene is survived by nephews and nieces, including West Kubik of Tulsa, Mark Kubik and Jeff Kubik, both of Newkirk, Mike Taylor of Arkansas City, and Linda Wertz of Sugar Land, Tex.; and a number of great-nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill and Lynn; and a sister, Nellie.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Newkirk with the Rev. Rick Wertz officiating. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Those serving as casket bearers will be Ross Kubik, Matt Kubik, Jason Kubik, Thomas Wertz, David Taylor and Drew Taylor.
