Eleanor Rose Scott Eatherly, 92, passed away on September 25, 2019, in The Villages, Florida.

Eleanor (also known as Scottie to her friends and GoGo to her family) was born on September 6, 1927, in Studley, Kansas, as the third child of George Winfield and Margaret Pearl (Jones) Scott. Raised with six sisters and one brother, she moved to Alamo, Texas, at the age of fourteen. After graduating from PSJA High School, she joined the Cadet Nurses Corp in San Antonio, Texas, where she attended classes at College and Academy of the Incarnate Word and Santa Rosa Hospital.

She married James Roland Eatherly in 1950 before moving to Austin, then Houston, and finally settling in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Together they raised three children, Pamela, Jimmie, and Matt.

As an avid volunteer, Scottie held leadership positions in many local organizations.

For 20 years, she served the Camp Fire Girls as a leader, board member, and the first woman president of the council. She served as president of the Hospital Auxiliary, chairman of the heart drive, and president of the Women’s Golf Association at the Ponca City Country Club.

She volunteered in both support and executive roles for numerous civic and charitable organizations, including the Ponca City Art Association, library, Indian Museum, Cultural Center, Old Timers Rodeo Association, cancer drive and the United Way. In 1975, she served as co-chairman of the bicentennial fundraiser for The Follies, in both Ponca City and Tonkawa.

She was also an honoree for the AAUW Women of the Year award. Active in the PTA and League of Women Voters, she campaigned for Governor Henry Bellmon as a “Bellmon Bell” and Governor Dewey Bartlett as a “Dewey Doll.” In 1980, Scottie received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Ponca City Chamber of Commerce. In 1981, Governor George Nigh appointed her to the State Ethics and Merit Board for a four-year term.

Her interests included collecting antique clothes, putting on style shows and donating the clothes to the Ponca City Cultural Center. To satisfy her travel bug, she worked for Bartletts Travel as a tour guide and traveled to six continents and more than 90 countries. She loved parties with her birthday group comprising many dear friends, and she enjoyed belonging to the Red Hat Society in The Villages, Florida, where she relocated in 2004 to embrace the nice weather and travel with her family.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her daughter, Pamela Gay Legate. She is survived by her children: Jimmie Alice Eatherly and husband Wayne Rickman, The Villages, Florida; and Matthew Scott Eatherly and wife Ann, Orlando, Florida; her grandchildren, Shannon Rickman, and Alyssa and Anna Eatherly; Isabel and Pascal Legate; her sisters Bonny Hooks, and Mava Branham. She will be remembered fondly as sister, a mother and grandmother, a constant friend, and a wonderful woman to be dearly missed by all. paid obituary
