Charles Lee Jacques, longtime Newkirk area rancher, died late Tuesday morning, Jan. 28, 2020 in the Kansas Veterans Home, Winfield. He was 89.

The son of Charles Campbell Jacques and Gladsy Isabell (Bragg) Jacques, Lee was born Jan. 19, 1931 at Carter Nine near Shidler. He began his education in the Canadian Rural School through the 8th grade. He then attended Newkirk High School, graduating with the class of 1948.

Following graduation Lee went into partnership with his father, and together they operated the family ranch. On March 12, 1952 he was inducted into the United States Marine Corps. He served two years and then was transferred to the Marine Corps Reserves. He returned home and worked with his dad in their ranching operation.

On July 27, 1955 Lee and Barbara Lee Lazzelle were married in the First Christian Church of Ponca City. They established their first home in Newkirk, moving two months later to the ranch where they raised their three children, Charles “Chuck”, Clay and Carole. The marriage ended in divorce after 30 years.

Lee received his Honorable Discharge from the Reserves in 1960. He worked on the ranch and ran his cattle operation until his retirement at the age of 73 in 2004.

He moved to Newkirk where he lived until the age of 87, and confronted the end of his life at the Kansas Veteran’s Home in Winfield, Kansas.

Lee was a member of the Newkirk Masonic Lodge #88 and the American Legion. He was a past member of the 106 School Board from 1962-1970 and had served eight years on the Newkirk Farmers Co-op Board.

He was proud of his service in the Marine Corps, loved hard work, running cattle, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Lee is survived by his children, Charles “Chuck” Jacques of Grapevine, Tex. and Carol and Brett Stephens of Newkirk; and his four grandchildren, Katie Jacques of Berlin, Germany, Charley Jacques of Tulsa, Michele and Jace Lightsey of Newkirk, and Kelyn and Taylor Disel of Stillwater.

He was preceded in death by a son, Clay Jacques; his parents; and two sisters, Barbara Ann Kubik and Beverly Collyar.

Cremation has been effected. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 in the First Presbyterian Church of Newkirk with the Rev. Mark Southard officiating. Interment will take place at an earlier time in the Newkirk Cemetery. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
