United Way of North Central Oklahoma celebrates 85 years

United Way of North Central Oklahoma, as it is known today, began in 1938 raising $19,500 under the name of Ponca City Community Chest. The first campaign chairman was Reverend O.L. Shelton. The name changed to United Fund in the 1960’s and to United Way of Ponca City in January 1974, with its first paid director, Bonnie Phillips hired in 1973. Since the beginning, Ponca City’s most prominent citizens have held leadership positions in the organization. With the help of the citizens of Kay County, United Way has raised over $30,887,127. It began with a goal of $19,500 eighty-five years ago, to a goal for 20232024 of $514,000 under the direction of campaign chair Erica Fetters.

Three dead in Washington state after drinking milkshakes made in Listeria-contaminated machine

Three people have died after being infected with Listeria bacteria traced to a Tacoma, Washington, restaurant’s ice cream machine, health officials said. Listeria was present in all three milkshake flavors sold at Frugals restaurant, the Washington State Department of Public Health said Friday.
