Meet the new NOKHS Board President, Justin Mathews

Along with a new Executive Director this year, Northern Oklahoma Humane Society also welcomes a new board president. Justin Mathews, a 2003 Ponca City High School graduate, moved back home from Dallas in 2019. When his own furry family member began to have medical issues, including seizures, Justin established his own business, Paws on the Pavement, to have a more flexible work schedule to spend more time with and take care of his dog. It was shortly after that time that Justin began volunteering with NOKHS.

During a visit to the biggest immigration jail in Georgia, a federal investigator found a clinic that was “among the dirtiest medical spaces I have ever seen in a U.S. detention facility.” At another Georgia facility holding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees, a nurse ignored an asthma patient’s request to urgently see a doctor over concerns with his inhaler.

Canadian city of 130,000 declares emergency as wildfires near

Record-breaking wildfires in Canada, which have already scorched an area larger than Greece, are heading toward key population centers, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate. Authorities declared a state of emergency in Kelowna, the largest city in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, an idyllic tourist region known for its vineyards, orchards and ski hills.

Trump cancels news conference to promote election fraud theories

Former President Donald Trump canceled a news conference he planned to hold on Monday in response to his latest indictment, because, he said, of advice from his lawyers. Earlier this week, Trump on his Truth Social platform said he would release a report bolstering his persistent and unfounded claims of a stolen election in 2020.
