The Poncan Theatre Board of Directors has named the historical stage at the theatre as the Pat “Patti” Evans — Stage of Performing Arts.

Allen Hardesty, board member, said this is a big deal for the theatre. “There’s only one room named after someone and that is upstairs,” said Hardesty. “This is a really big deal for the Evans family to have the stage named after Pat.”

Many individuals and businesses in Ponca City have been instrumental in the success of the Poncan Theatre through the years. Fred Pickrel, the first theatre director, brought in musicals, plays and famous entertainers to begin the long-lasting success of The Poncan. The Hall family, who managed the theatre for 31 years, continued the entertainment that stated in 1927.

After some struggling years, The Poncan was forced to close in 1985. “Because of many local gifting patrons, including Larry Buck, the theatre was restored and reopened in 1994,” said Hardesty.

“The Poncan was also blessed with another committed individual who put in a lot of time and financial assistance into the historical theatre,” said Hardesty.

“Pat Evans was part of the creativity of the Evans Children’s Academy of Performing Arts and encouraged and assisted in generating something special that may never be matched.”

In 2009 Evans Children’s Academy of Performing Arts was formed through a financial gift from Pat Evans. “The Poncan Theatre is one of Ponca City’s treasures, as are our children. I am passionate about the arts and feel privileged to participate in affording this opportunity for children to experience theatre art in this unique manner,” said Pat at the time the academy began.

Former Poncan Theatre Executive Director, Dave May, stated, “Pat Evans’ gift provided the seed money for Ponca City’s first full time year-round children’s theatre organization. Evans Children’s Academy of Performing Arts has touched the lives of area children and their families in wonderful ways by providing training and performance opportunities for all area children.”

“We, as a board, are honored and grateful to Ms. Evans and the Evans family for their continued support,” said Hardesty.
