7 Clans Casino will host country and gospel vocal quartet The Oak Ridge Boys on Saturday, May 28. This performance is a part of the group’s “Elvira 40 1981-2021” Tour to commemorate the 40th anniversary of their signature song “Elvira”.

Richard Sterban, bass singer for The Oak Ridge Boys, provided some details about the tour.

“This year was planned to be a 40th anniversary for Elvira. One thing you can count on is you are going to hear Elvira and giddy up ba-oom papa oom papa mow mow,” said Sterban on what fans can expect at the show. “[The show is a] nice mixture of new and old, with something for every member of the family.” Sterban, prior to joining

Sterban, prior to joining The Oak Ridge Boys, sang for two years with J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet. During his time with this group, they got a call to be a backup group for the King of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis Presley.

“So there I was and all of the sudden I was in the right place and right time singing with the King of Rock and Roll and to be a part of it was very exciting,” said Sterban.

Sterban received a phone call from William Lee Golden of the Oak Ridge Boys, who wanted to know if Sterban was interested in singing with the group in 1972.

“I had to make a decision and was a big fan of the Oak Ridge Boys, loved the music and felt that had a great potential,” said Sterban. “A lot of people questioned that, but I believed in my heart I did the right thing, and 50 years later I can look back and say I made the right decision.”

Besides music, Sterban is an avid fan of baseball. Sterban recalls being three years old when he went to his first baseball game in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to watch the Philly’s play.

“It is a passion of mine, I was hooked at three yearsold,” said Sterban.

Along with professional baseball, Sterban is a fan of college baseball, particularly the Vanderbilt Commodores.

He has also recorded public service announcements for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio network. He is also the voice for the Classic Country channel on Sirius Satellite Radio.

The Oak Ridge Boys have a new album coming out on June 11, 2021 titled: Front Porch Singin’ produced by Dave Cobb, a six time Grammy Award winning record producer and songwriter.

“Dave Cobb is very, very much in demand,” said Sterban. “Dave has produced our last three or four projects including our Christmas album.”

The idea for this new album came from the group’s Christmas tour where they have a rocking chair segment where they sit in rocking chairs provided by Cracker Barrel and talk about childhood Christmas memories and sing.

Cobb wanted to capture the down home feeling of these segments on record.

“Cobb is a master of making things sound good; great material on this project, gospel, country songs new and old,” said Sterban on the project. “It’s a nice balance of old and new but captures that feeling of four guys on a porch harmonizing.”

Sterban described Cobb wanted the feeling of four guys on a porch harmonizing and wanted to capture the sounds of the voices, the heart and the soul of The Oak Ridge Boys.

“Songs themselves are very inspirational and timely and appropriate for what we’ve been going through and the overall project is very inspirational for this time we live in,” said Sterban.

Front Porch Singin’ will be available in vinyl format that can be ordered at oakridgeboys.com with information on how to get a pre-signed vinyl copy. The album will also be available at Cracker Barrel restaurants.

The Oak Ridge Boys will be performing at 7 Clans Casino at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 28.
