When I was a kid, we had these things called encyclopedias. Some of you reading this article will remember them. I would sit for hours at a time and pour over page after page. I learned about ancient civilizations. I saw pictures of crazy looking animals I had never heard of. I read about inventors, explorers, and cowboys. Now we call it the internet. We have massive amounts of knowledge and information all around us. As I sit here at my computer, I’m just a click away from discovering all kinds of information that could be helpful for life.

But that has me wondering, “What do we do with all this knowledge at our fingertips?” The answer is we must learn to correctly apply what we know. That’s where wisdom comes in. Wisdom is defined as “the ability to discern, insight, good sense, or judgment.” We have all this information and knowledge swirling all around us. Where do we get the ability to apply it and to use it correctly?

To answer that question, we must first answer the question, “Where does wisdom come from?” The Bible has the answer. The Bible tells us there is an eternal God who created all things. He is the author of all of life. He is your author. He is your designer. He is your creator. Since He is the creator, He alone holds the instruction manual on how life is supposed to operate. The God of all creation has all the wisdom that we need to do life the way He designed for it to be done. Job gives us this insight, “With God are wisdom and might; He has counsel and understanding” (Job 12:13). Job understood that God possessed the wisdom he needed for life. King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 9:10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”

Wisdom for life, insight and understanding. Where does it come from? It comes from the Lord. It comes from the God who made us. That word “fear” in the previous verse has to do with “reverence, respect, acknowledging of God.” Basically, Solomon is saying to us, in respecting and acknowledging God for who He is we begin to gain wisdom for how our lives are meant to be lived. When we choose to see God as the Bible describes him (all-knowing, all-powerful, all-loving, all-present) then we begin to gain insight into how our lives are meant to be lived. Then if we choose to believe in and follow the God who created us, we gain access into His wisdom for life.

James wrote to tell us that God desires to give us His wisdom. God desires for us to do life according to His purpose. James 1:5-6 states, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.” Let’s face it, we all fall into that category of “if anyone lacks wisdom.” None of us have life figured out. We need wisdom to make our marriages work. We need wisdom to navigate the ups and downs of being single. We need wisdom to raise our kids. We need wisdom when we show up at work. We need wisdom to know which career to pursue. We need wisdom when conflict sneaks into our relationships and we aren’t sure how to handle it. The bottom line—we need wisdom for life.

You can try to continue figuring life out on your own. But that’s not going to get you very far. That would be like me sitting here trying to fix a problem on my Mac computer. Trust me, if this thing has an issue I’m lost. I could try and try and try to figure it out on my own, completely ignoring the fact that there is someone who designed this machine and knows how it should work. Or I can pick up the phone and call the one with all the answers.

Where do you turn for the answers to life? Do you run to the encyclopedia? Do you search the internet? Let me encourage you to turn to the God who created you. He loves you. He has a design for your life. He knows how it’s supposed to be lived. There is wisdom available for every aspect of your life. Pursue a relationship with the Lord through His Son Jesus Christ and ask Him to give you the wisdom to do life the way He designed for it to be done.
