The Pioneer Woman Statue is now sporting masks to remind the community that we are all in this together.

Kelly Houston, director of the Pioneer Woman Museum, said the members of the board were talking about how they could get masks on the statue. “I was contacted by Ponca City citizen, Dave Williams, who had the same idea,” said Houston. “Williams provided the masks for the Statue, as well as putting them on the statue, not an easy task as she stands 33 feet tall! Legacy Signs donated the banner sign to go along with it. The Pioneer Woman Museum and Advisory Board is very thankful to Williams for making this happen and to Legacy Signs for donating the sign.”

The Pioneer Woman Statue represents many things, like perseverance, strength and courage. Her official name is “Confident.” She was created by Bryant Baker, as a result of a contest created and sponsored by E. W. Marland in 1927. Shipped by train from New York City to Ponca City, Oklahoma, she was dedicated April 22, 1930 in an unveiling ceremony. It was a very popular event with approximately 44,000 people in attendance. Will Rogers was the guest speaker.

The Pioneer Woman Museum had planned to celebrate her 90th birthday this month but have put the celebration on hold due to COVID-19. “Wearing the masks she serves as a reminder to everyone, to work together, and to do everything we can to keep each other healthy during this challenging time!” said Houston.
