Kay County youth got to experience sewing at a 4-H Sewing Day Camp Thursday and Friday, July 22-23, 2021.

The two day camp was held in the mornings in the Kay Room at Kay Electric Cooperative in Blackwell, Oklahoma. Ten 4-H members, several leaders, and volunteers were available to instruct and help with every step. Lots of material was available for their choice of colors, patterns, etc. Irons and ironing boards were available to help with the process.

The group got to learn the terms and basics of a sewing machine, practice sewing straight and curved lines on paper with a pattern imprinted on it. Then they started sewing their first project, hot pads. Day two started with choosing material to sew pil low cases.

Lori Evans, Newkirk Go-Getters 4-H Club leader said, “The sewing day camp is a perfect head start for the kids to learn the basics for the upcoming monthly sewing class, 4-H SPIN Sewing Club. All the kids at the camp are enrolled in the new monthly sewing class. This will give them ideas learning how and what to sew for their Kay County Fair 4-H project entries.”

The 4-H SPIN Sewing Club is open for enrollment to all 4-H youth ages 8-18. Kay County Extension has nine machines for the youth to learn to use.

“This is a basic life skill that will benefit the kids and there are a lot of projects to choose from in the 4-H sewing curriculum. Fabrics, fashion, and interior design careers start with learning to sew,” said Brenda Medlock, Kay County Extension Director, Family and Consumer Sciences/ 4-H Educator.

With participation in every meeting, class, show, or event 4-H members are learning, doing, and getting involved. It’s about your head, your heart, your hands, and your health. 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills.
