Kris ti Myers teaches 8th grade La nguage Arts at East Middle SchooL She grew up in Kaw City, Oklahoma and graduated from Shidler High SchooL She then received a BBA from UCO, with a minor in finance. She has been marr ied to her husband Rick for 35 years and has three children and one grandson.

After her children started school, she became a teacher's assistant in the district for four and a half years, and then realized she wanted to become a teacher. Myers has been teaching at East Middle School for 11 years.

To Myers, education can open endless possibilities and isn't just about teaching the standards.

"We, as teachers, help students build relationships, gain confidence, develop speaking and listening skills, and enjoy the "aha" moments of each day," said Mye r s. "I am so glad I get to be part of my students' day. I also work with amazing staff at East Middle School, and am thankful I can call them my friends."

For Myers, an important concept to get across is that "kindness matters".

"It is difficult to learn in an unfriendly environment," said Myers. "I also make sure each student knows that each day is br and-new with new opportunities. I feel t hat if you can build a relationship with your students, then the desire to learn will usually follow."
