OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt on Monday ordered all Oklahoma flags to be lowered to half staff in honor of the late U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn.

All flags on state property are to be lowered Monday in remembrance of Coburn, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

“We lost a giant – an Oklahoma legend,” Stitt said in a statement. “Dr. Coburn devoted his life to serving others both by way of his career as a physician and by tirelessly fighting for our country as a true statesman.”

Coburn, who died Saturday at age 72, was a conservative Republican who served three terms in the U.S. House and was twice elected to the U.S. Senate, known for railing against federal earmarks.

Coburn resigned from the Senate during his second term, in January 2015, after being diagnosed with a recurrence of prostate cancer. He said he was convinced he could “best serve my own children and grandchildren by shifting my focus elsewhere.”
