PRESS RELEASE

Ponca City Astronomy will hold a special event on both Saturday January 23 and Sunday January 24. We will be at the Lake Ponca Campground on Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 with telescopes to look at the planet Mercury as well as the Moon, Mars and the Orion Nebula. We will be at the Ponca City RecPlex on Sunday at the same time.

Mercury is visible quite often but difficult to see as it is so small and close to the Sun. It is only visible for a few hours after sunset then it is visible when it is on the other side of the Sun for a few hours before sunrise.

At the Lake Ponca Campground the light pollution is a lot less and we will be able to find the Andromeda Galaxy with the telescope when the sky gets darker.

In the Orion Nebula you can see brand new baby suns (stars) that are only around a million years old, given that our Sun is over 5 Billion years old, that makes these suns quite young. The stars are in a cloud of gas and dust that is lit up by these new stars making the clouds visible as well. The events by Ponca
