Overpopulation of feral cat colonies can pose many problems for a community. These feral cats are often the offspring of abandoned domestic cats who have adapted to living in the wild.

An overflow of stray cats can also overwhelm rescues and animal shelters and to this end the Northern Oklahoma Fix-A-Feral program is working to solve the community cat overpopulation crisis.

The ultimate goal of the Fix-A-Feral program is to permanently reduced the local feral cat population through a method known as Trap Neuter-Return or TNR.

Through the TNR program, feral cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies and ear-tipped for a visual identifier of the sterilized cat, before finally being returned to their original colony.

These methods are to ensure that the problem of cat colonies is solved humanely and with effective methodology. The use of TNR will lead to permanent reduction of the local feral cat population by ending reproduction and removing both kittens and socialized cats.

With TNR implemented, this will reduce smell as neutered male cats mark less territory. Spayed and neutered cats also make less noise and research indicates than animal control receives fewer feral cat complaints.

Fix-A-Feral program is a more positive, effective and humane way to solve many health, euthanasia and overpopulation issues. The city incurs higher animal control and shelter costs from the continual intake of feral cats and kittens.

The Northern Oklahoma Human Society will provide program training, equipment, coordination and it’s nonprofit status for tax deductible community donations.

In order for the program to be sustainable and effective, Fix-A-Feral will need help, support and collaboration of the community as a whole.
