Thursday was not a good day for Ponca City’s varsity basketball teams. They both lost in the opening rounds of tournaments, and the games were not close.

In the Titan Classic at Carl Albert High School in Midwest City, the Wildcats lost a 78-50 decision to Del City. A little later in the day, the Lady Cats had trouble scoring and went down to a 56-17 defeat at the hands of Mustang while playing in the Union-Jenks Invitational at Tulsa Union High School. Both teams dropped to the consolation round where they were back in action on Friday.

MIDWEST CITY -- The Ponca City Wildcats had a challenging task Thursday. They drew a very good Del City team in the first round of the Titan Classic and the No. 7 ranked Eagles lived up to their reputation.

The Wildcats were relatively close throughout the first quarter and trailed by a respectable six points (19-13) at the end. But Del City got rolling in the second quarter and led by as many as 18 points at one stage. The half time score was 36-21. From that point, the Wildcats were pretty much out of the contest. Del City led 56-34 after three quarters and then added 22 points in the final period to fashion out the 78-50 final.

Only two Wildcats scored in double digits. Grant Dye had 19 points to lead the way and Stephen Faulkner added 10. The Wildcats are now 3-5 on the season.
