“I am so bored, I can’t stand it,” was the reaction of Ponca City head football Coach Scott Harmon when asked how things are going.

Harmon’s boredom comes in large part because of schools being closed down at least through April 6 due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Due to Ponca City School

Due to Ponca City School District, Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association and State of Oklahoma mandates, the closure of school also means that there will be no sports activities, no instruction, and no practices or organized workouts.

The OSSAA has not mandated that spring sports will be cancelled for the remainder of the present school year.

In fact the latest OSSAA statement says that every effort is being made to sal vage spring sports schedules

The same is true for the status of state basketball tournaments which were postponed from their original schedules. Ponca City’s girls team qualified for the Class 6A state tournament and is holding on to the hope that it will eventually be played. But, for now, no practices or official workouts are permitted.

Spring sports coaches indicate that everything is at a standstill for their teams.

“We are doing nothing at this time,” boys soccer coach Ben Steichen said about what is going on with Po-Hi’s soccer teams.

“We are following our disctrict’s policy of not meeting or organizing any events or practices until school is back in session,” he said.

When asked if the players are working out on their own, he responded, “We recommended it so, hopefully.”

Baseball Coach Casey Love also indicated that his team members were on their own as far as working out is concerned.

“They are working out on their own, throwing, hitting, running to stay in shape,” he said.

While Harmon is the coach of a fall sport, his team members are usually involved in a series of organized programs through the spring and summer.

“We want them to do conditioning and running, but they can’t do any of it in school facilities. We have informed them of what programs of self conditioning we recommend, including working out two or three days a week.”

The question of whether or not football’s Spring Practice will be a possibility still has an unknown answer. That will depend on how the coronavirus situation plays out.
