Ponca City Wildcat head football Coach Scott Harmon was relatively pleased with the way things went in the annual Red vs. Navy scrimmage session Saturday night at Sullins Stadium.

It was only the second day that the Wildcats could practice in full pads according to Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association guidelines and Harmon and his staff had an opportunity to do some evaluation of the players who participated.

“It was our first live reps of offense vs. defense,” Harmon said. “As usual, the defense is ahead of the offense. We got a little better as the night progressed but stayed a little vanilla on purpose. We will evaluate film and make some adjustments going into the week of our first scrimmage with Stillwater on Friday. We have a lot of young talent. We flew to the ball well defensively. There were too many mental mistakes on offense for our style of play.”

The scrimmage Saturday was done in front of a limited crowd of fans. Ponca City Public Schools were urging only family members of the football players to be in attendance. Mask wearing and social distancing was requested.

On Friday, the Wildcats are scheduled to participate in a multi-school scrimmage at Stillwater. Ninth grade, junior varsity and varsity players are scheduled to participate.

The first scheduled game of the season is Sept. 4 against Enid at Sullins Stadium. Live streaming is anticipated so that Wildcat fans can follow their team this season.
