Mavs’ basketball run ends at the Elite Eight

HUTCHINSON, Kansas -- The Northern Oklahoma College Mavs’ season came to an end in the Elite Eight Thursday afternoon losing to Coffeyville (KS) in an 83-80 overtime thriller in the NJCAA Tournament.

The Mavs (24-2) saw their 13-game winning streak come to an end.

NOC was led by JD Ray with 22 points while Avante Lederer added 18, Nate Goodlow 12, and Tyrel Morgan 11.

“I thought we went out and competed at a high level,” said coach Donnie Jackson. “Our guys played physical and tough and they stuck to our game plan. I’m extremely proud of our effort. The game could have gone either way. It was a fantastic game to be a part of. Coffeyville has a great team and I tip my cap to them.”

“It’s never easy when the season ends,” Jackson added. “We have had one heck of a run. We showed that we belonged. It was an incredible game, unfortunately someone had to lose. I’m so proud of my sophomore group. They went 52-6 in their two-year career with two trips to Hutch. They have etched their names in NOC history.”

In overtime, Coffeyville built a 75-71 lead before a Ray 3-pointer cut the lead to 75-74. After the Ravens answered with a 3-point play, Lederer hit two free throws to but the lead to 78-76. Coffeyville then made two free throws which Dylan McLean answered with a short jumper cutting the lead to 80-78.

The Ravens again made two free throws but Ray answered with a short jumper narrowing the margin to 82-80 with :17 left.

The Mavs fouled and Coffeyville made one free throw extending the lead to 83-80 giving the Mavs an opportunity in the game’s waning seconds but the Mavs couldn’t convert open looks from McLean and Lederer to tie the game.

There were seven lead changes in the game’s final 7:29 of regulation with the Ravens tying the game at 71-71 with :07 remaining in regulation.

The Mavs jumped out to an early 20-9 lead and then after Coffeyville rallied to take a 34-33 lead, NOC scored the final eight points of the half to take a 41-34 lead into the dressing room. The final four points came on a 3-pointer by Goodlow who was fouled and then converted the four-point play.

Morgan led the Mavs with 12 rebounds while Ray added six assists.

NOC shot 46% (27-59) from the field and 72% (18-25) from the line while the Red Ravens shot 39% (22-56) from the field and 76% (31-41) from the line.

The Red Ravens shot 40% (8-20) from 3-point range while the Mavs shot 35% (8-23) from beyond the arc.
