Lady Cats hold off late Stillwater surge

The Ponca City Lady Cats softball team held off a late charge by Stillwater this week to pull off a 6-5 victory at the West Middle School softball field.

The Lady Cats let 6-3 going into the seventh inning. Stillwater scored twice and had the tying run at third base when Margaret Blackstar caught a fly ball to the outfield for the third out which preserved the Ponca City win.

Stillwater scored once in the third to tak a 1-0 lead and added two in the fourth. Ponca City picked up three runs in the fifth to tie and then took the lead with three runs in the sixth.

Libby Clark pitched seven innings for the win. She gave up nine hits and four earned runs while walking three and striking out three.

Ponca City had eight hits. Alex Zimmershied, Madelyn Blackstar and Savannah Clark each had two hits. and Libby Clark and Taylor McMartin each had one. McMartin’s hit was a triple the only extra base hit garnered by the Lady Cats.

McMartin had two RBIs, while Madelyn Blackstar, Margaret Blackstar, Allanah Florez and Savannah Clark each had one.

“The girls played well,” Coach Daniel Wood said. We never took outselves of of it and they just keep getting it out and trusting what we’re doing.”
