Former NFL quarterback: Chiefs must improve or they’ll be ‘door stomped’ by Ravens

Sep. 22--The Chiefs are 2-0 and there are 21 other teams in the NFL that would love to make that claim.

But Sunday’s 23-20 road win over the division-rival Chargers clearly didn’t impress some people around the NFL. The Chiefs dropped in a number of the latest NFL power rankings, and former quarterback Dan Orlovsky said the Chiefs have mistakes to fix before their “Monday Night Football” game against the Baltimore Ravens.

“One of the things I kind of learned (Sunday) or haven’t appreciated enough about the Chiefs is one of the reasons for their success is not only talent, it’s they’re all gas, no brakes,” Orlovsky said on ESPN’s “First Take.” “There is this never-ending ‘We are going to be aggressive mind-set.’

“Now it helps if you have the best player in football in (Patrick) Mahomes and that’s how you have those scrambles on third down or those two throws -- the touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill and the two-point conversion to Mecole Hardman. They just have this belief that we are going to never stop applying pressure to you as a defense.”

But Orlovsky, the former Lions/Buccaneers/Colts quarterback, said the were areas in which the Chiefs could improve from Sunday’s game. Ten of the Chiefs’ first-down plays against the Chargers went for 1 or zero yards, they converted 47% of their third-down plays and were penalized 11 times.

That won’t fly Monday night against the Ravens, Orlovsky said.

“If they play like this next Monday night they’re going to get door stomped by the Baltimore Ravens. They gotta play better. They have not executed efficiently, they’ve been poor on first downs. That’s why they got into so many third-and-longs,” Orlovsky said.

“So it’s great when you can win football games in the NFL but also learn from them, right? We so often talk about how we can learn from our mistakes. The can go learn from this football game while also sitting 2-0 and that’s going to matter next Monday night.”
