Cowgirls out-rebounded by Mountaineers, drop game in West Virginia

As the conclusion of the Big 12 season grows near, the OSU Cowgirls are beginning to skid.

Just a few days after losing to Kansas on the road, OSU met the same fate when they traveled to Morgantown to take on West Virginia, losing 71-67 on Wednesday.

The Cowgirls were once again outrebounded and lost the points in the paint battle, allowing the Mountaineers to have their way on the inside. Unlike their last game when Taiyanna Jackson dismantled OSU for 21 rebounds, WVU took a group-oriented approach, with no player grabbing more than six boards.

Even more damaging to the Cowgirls was the outside shooting of Madisen Smith, who lit OSU up with 24 points, four rebounds and an assist leading the Mountaineers to victory.

Smith swished two 3-pointers, both coming during the second half when OSU fought to take back some of the momentum that WVU had built, which was a theme throughout.

Whenever the Cowgirls would make their runs, WVU would swiftly grab back the momentum, erasing any chance for OSU to go on a prolonged run.

The Cowgirls have run into this problem before. Earlier this season when OSU traveled to the Moody Center to take on Texas, they would get close to getting within a possession or two, only for the Longhorns to take back control and go on a run of their own to extend the lead.

This is a trend the Cowgirls will have to buck if they want to make a run in the NCAA Tournament, which they are still virtually locked into despite their two-game skid.
