When Ponca City boys soccer Coach Ben Steichen looks at his current team, he sees positive numbers.

One such number is 45, which is equal to the number of players he has competing for playing time. That’s a big number, compared to past seasons. Another positive number is 13, equal to the number of seniors on the team’s roster. The large number of seniors indicates that the Wildcats have a lot of experienced players.

“Our seniors have lots of playing time under their belts. I am stoked about what they can offer us,” Steichen said. “We’re also hoping that the younger players will have opportunities to get experience.”

One of the bright spots on the team is goalkeepter Sergio “Checo” Aguilar. Steichen says that during the preseason scrimmages, opposing teams have been impressed by Aguilar’s work around the goal.

Key defenders will be seniors Malakai Johnson, Miles Greer and Israel Menchaca. Steichen said that sophomore Adrian Perez is becoming a factor in the defensive game as well.

At midfield Eliseo Ramirez is a driving force on the field, according to the coach.

And at the offensive end of the field are Antonio Aguilar, Cayden Andersen and Gabe Roland. “I’m thrilled at what they have shown so far,” Steichen said.

Yet another player of note is Dax Iraggi, who has been willing to play a variety of roles.

“I feel really good,” Steichen said about his team. “The guys are working really hard.” Steichen is hoping for a break-out year for his team. “We are in a tough district. The guys competed well at times during the season (last year), but just couldn’t get over the hump.”

During the recently completed preseason schedule, the Wildcats did pretty well, with the defense leading the way. Steichen is looking to his offensive corps to pick up the slack as the season goes on.

Steichen is back at the boys head coach role after a year away. He has been on the Wildcat sideline for 16 years, including 13 as head coach.
