Basketball teams each lose twice

In back-to-back games Friday and Saturday, Ponca City’s varsity basketball teams each lost twice.

On Friday in games at Po-Hi’s Robson Field House, the Lady Cats girls’ team lost to Midwest City 61-34, while the boys took Midwest City to overtime before losing 72-62. Saturday Ponca City’s teams traveled to Oklahoma City to play teams from Putnam City North. The Lady Cats lost 42-25 while the Wildcats dropped a 70-45 decision. Friday’s and Saturday’s games were Big 10 Conference contests.

Girls games

MIDWEST CITY 61, PONCA CITY 34

The Lady Cats stayed close to 6A’s No. 10 ranked team Friday through the first half. Ponca City trailed 12-8 after the first quarter and 25-20 at the half. But Midwest City began to pull away in the third quarter and really put some distance between itself and the Lady Cats in the fourth period. The score at the end of three was 46-31. Ponca City could only manage three points in the final quarter.

Missed layups and turnovers were problematic for Ponca City in the game.

Ashlynn Fincher scored 10 points for Ponca City. She was the only member of her team to finish in double figures. With the loss, the Lady Cats record dropped to 3-2 and 1-1 in conference play. Midwest City improved its overall mark to 6-3.

PUTNAM NORTH 42, PONCA CITY 25

In another game against a ranked team Saturday, the Ponca City Lady Cats had difficulty in putting points on the scoreboard and lost by 17 points to 6A’s No. 9 Putnam City North.

The Lady Cats had only one point in the first quarter, a free throw by Emma Gertken. Kyra Allison scored Ponca City’s first twopointer two minutes into the second quarter. Putnam North’s lead was 9-1 after one quarter and 15-10 at the half. Ponca City trailed 25-14 at the end of three quarters. It was another game in which turnovers and missed opportunities plagued the Ponca City girls.

Freshman Allison was the only one to reach double figures. She finished with 11.

Boys games

MIDWEST CITY 72, PONCA CITY 62 (OT)

The Ponca City Wildcats pushed No. 10 ranked Midwest City to the limits on Friday taking the game to overtime. But the extra period belonged to Midwest City and they pulled out a 10-point victory.

A three-point basket by senior Anthony Gazaway with 40 seconds remaining in regulation time tied the game at 60-60 which was the tally when the clock ran out of time. Ponca City took a 62-60 lead in overtime only to see Midwest City reel off 12 consecutive points to conclude the game.

The game was close throughout with multiple lead changes. The score was tied 12-12 after one period. Midwest City led 35-30 at the half, but Ponca City evened things at 45-45 at the end of the third quarter.

Four Wildcats scored in double figures. Grant Dye had 19; Steven Faulkner had 17, and Anthony Gazaway and Marshawn Webb each had 10.

“I was so proud of our men and women for their effort to play hard on Senior Night,” boys coach Ivan McFarlin said. “To play against a top 10 team in 6A and take them to overtime shows the commitment that they are willing to make. I love all my seniors and I wish them the best success in their lives. Our young guys, Grant Dye, Isaac Valencia and Brooks Revard made some key plays in the game, so I’m proud of them.”

Five Wildcat seniors were recognized in the Senior Night activities--Anthony Gazaway, Steven Faulkner, Collin Crandall, Culley Porter and Marshawn Webb.

PUTNAM NORTH 70, PONCA CITY 45

Putnam City North demonstrated why it carries a No. 4 ranking in Class 6A by defeating the Wildcats by 25 points Saturday. The Panthers led 16-10 after one quarter, 32-18 at the half and 53-30 after three quarters.

With the loss Ponca City dropped to 1-2 in Big 10 conference play and 3-3 overall.

Three Wildcats finished in double figures--Grant Dye had 13; Steven Faulkner had 12 and Collin Crandall had 10.

“I felt we were a little tired from Senior Night and a little sluggish to start the game,” McFarlin said about Saturday’s game. “I’m not giving my guys any excuses and we will continue to improve as a team to turn this losing streak around! We lost to a good 6A team that won the state two years back.”
