Ponca City’s football season ended last week with a playoff loss at Del City, but area schools are still alive in the 2020 postseason.

Playing second round games Friday night will be the Tonkawa Buccaneers, the Pawnee Black Bears, the Woodland Cougars and the Morrison Wildcats. Three, Tonkawa, Pawnee and Woodland are scheduled to play at home. Morrison will be on the road. Tonkawa’s opponent will be Dibble, Pawnee’s will be Quapaw, Commerce will be in Fairfax to play Woodland and Morrison will travel to Lenapah to play Oklahoma Union. Newkirk opted out of the playoffs and Deer Creek-Lamont had to forfeit an opening round game at Oaks Mission due to COVID-19 concerns. Blackwell lost its opening round Class 3A playoff game to Prague.

The Class 6A-II playoffs will continue to the second round with Del City at Bixby, Booker T. Washington at Midwest City, Putnam City North at Choctaw and Sand Springs at Stillwater

DIBBLE AT TONKAWA

The Tonkawa Buccaneers have had a good season, bouncing back from one in which they missed the playoffs all together. They finished the regular season with an 8-2 record and then defeated Stratford 28-20 in the first round of the playoffs. The Bucs were second in District A-3 behind Cashion. The two losses came to Class 2A Perry early in the season and Cashion. Their opponent Friday will be the Dibble Demons, who will bring a 6-4 record to the contest. Dibble lost its opener to Minco (14-6), then won three in a row topping Little Axe (25-0), Rush Springs (37-18) and Healdton (34-22). A 42-7 loss to Anadarko started a string of three straight losses, which also include defeats to Wayne (27-21), and defending Class A state champion Ringling (21-6). The Demons then topped Stratford (48-12) and Wynnewood (55- 0) in the regular season and last week whipped Watonga (43-32) in the first round of the playoffs. Dibble and Tonkawa have two common opponents--Stratford and Watonga. Tonkawa thumped Watonga 41-7 during the regular season but had more difficulty in beating Stratford than Dibble did.

COMMERCE AT WOODLAND

This has been a great year for the Woodland Cougars, who have put together a 10-1 season. The only loss was a district defeat at the hands of Pawnee. Coach Casey Goad was a member of strong Cougar teams in the past and he has brought this year’s outfit back in a way that is reminiscent of past Woodland glory years. The Cougars had little trouble in dispatching Fairland 60-0. This week’s opponent, Commerce, won’t be so easy. The Tigers posted a 5-4 record with two wins over Chelsea, and single victories over Quapaw, Ketchum and Afton. The losses were to Galena, Kan., Sarcoxie, Mo., Pawhuska and Oklahoma Union. Commerce has a grand tradition, which includes a standout athlete named Mickey Mantle. Woodland and Commerce has a common opponent in Chelsea. The Tigers whipped Chelsea twice, 40-18 in the regular season and 30-6 last week in the opening round of the playoffs. Woodland defeated Chelsea 67-22.

QUAPAW AT PAWNEE

The Pawnee Black Bears are ranked as one of the Top 5 teams in Oklahoma’s Class A. The Black Bears came off an undefeated regular season in 2019, and advanced to the semfinals in the playoffs. This year the Bears have been almost as impressive finishing 7-1 in the regular season. The only loss was to Class 2A stronghold Washington in the season’s opener. Since then the Bears have waltzed through its schedule and drew a first round bye in the postseason. Quapaw played only six games in the regular season winning four. The losses were to Pawhuska and Commerce, with wins coming over Chouteau, Wyandotte, Ketchum and Afton. Last week in the first round of the playoffs, the Wildcats topped Caney Valley 47-6. Caney Valley and Chouteau were common opponents for Pawnee and Quapaw.

MORRISON AT OKLAHOMA UNION

The Morrison Wildcats, like many other Oklahoma high school football teams have suffered through a difficult year in 2020. Despite the difficulty, Coach Cory Bales’ Wildcats have put together a decent season. An opportunity to play district champion Pawnee was wiped away because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the Wildcats lost only to Oklahoma Christian School in the season opener and to Woodland later in the season. Last week, the Wildcats topped Wyandotte in the first round of the playoffs. They will face a formidable opponent in Oklahoma Union. The Cougars won their last five games of the regular season to finish 5-2. The losses were to Woodland (34-30) and to Tulsa NOAH (34-21). They defeated Wyandotte, last week’s Morrison victim in the opening round, 53-0. The Morrison team has a great tradition and Bales’ and his staff are playoff savvy. The Wildcats have their sights set on advancing to the next round.
