Social Security and You

Body
‘60 Minutes’ and Social Security Overpayments The CBS news program “60 Minutes” ran a story this past Sunday that was critical of the Social Security Administration and the way the agency handles overpayments -- money sent to Social Security beneficiaries that they were not due. I’m going to address that issue in today’s column.

Dear Annie

Body
Dear Annie: I am 67 and divorced. I raised two daughters and a son essentially on my own while I worked full time as a registered nurse and provided a decent, middle- class home for my children.

Dear Annie

Body
Dear Annie: While I have thought of writing to you many times, I have never done so until now. “Old Soul’s” story touched me very much -- the one about being completely cut off from a friend. A few years ago, I had a very dear friend who shared everything. Then, out of the blue, she stopped having anything to do with me. I felt abandoned and alone. The worst part was that we attend the same church, so I saw her every week, but she would snub me and look the other way. It took me a while, but I finally got over it and moved on.

The Oldest Hatred Roars Back

Body
In one day of savagery, Hamas brought the world’s oldest hatred into the mainstream. The upwelling of antisemitism around the globe, and especially in the United States, mocks the naivety of those who imagined that the oldest hatred was mostly in the past, that Israel could be a normal nation, or that a twostate solution to the Palestinian issue could be realized in the near future. American Jews, stunned by the worst mass murder of Jews since the Holocaust, are reeling from the lack of basic decency shown by many progressives. If your ideology blinds you to the crimes of rape, arson, kidnapping and mass murder, what is there to discuss?

Legislators should take a look in the mirror before pointing fingers to figure out why major companies choose to set up shop elsewhere The City of Ardmore recently received devastating news that its Michelin tire plant will close by 2025. As Oklahoma Voice reporter Carmen Forman reported, the planned closure of the 53-year-old plant, which employs 1,400 workers, came as a shock to state and community leaders.

The One Where Matthew Perry Determines His Legacy

Body
Since Matthew Perry died last week, I’ve seen countless clips in my social media feed of his work as Chandler Bing on “Friends.” But snippets of a recent interview have also been circulating. In November 2022, Perry was a guest on “Q with Tom Power.” He was promoting his memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.” Perry told the show host, “When I die, I know people will talk about ‘Friends,’ ‘Friends,’ ‘Friends.’ And I’m glad of that, happy I’ve done some solid work as an actor, as well as given people multiple chances to make fun of my struggles on the World Wide Web... but when I die, as far as my so-called accomplishments go, it would be nice if ‘Friends’ were listed far behind the things I did to try to help other people. I know it won’t happen, but it would be nice.”
