Marilyn Sherrod, 78, of Ponca City, died on April 16, 2022, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, after struggling with illness for several years. She was born on April 10, 1944, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to parents Charles A. Hollopeter and Esther E. Hollopeter, both deceased. She is survived by her beloved husband Floyd, sisters Virginia (David) of Stillwater, Judy (Bill) of Broken Arrow, and Charlene (Danny) of Tonkawa, three stepchildren Floyd (Kimberly) of Sharpsburg, GA, Raquel (Chris) of Kansas City, and Randall of Colorado Springs. Marilyn’s twin sister Marianne was tragically killed in an automobile accident during their high school years. Marilyn’s other sisters, now deceased, were Eleanor, Carolyn, and Charlotte.

After working in Yosemite National Park for one summer, Marilyn went to the Tulsa area Where jobs were plentiful. Working there gave her the incentive to pursue the lifework she really wanted, which was nursing. She attended Bacone College, then went to the University of Kentucky where she obtained her degree as a registered nurse. Her first working environment was Louisville General Hospital, after which she worked at Fort Knox, KY, Fort Gordon, GA, Bay Pines VA Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, then on to Colorado where she worked for the Air Force Academy and was eventually selected to be their first case manager. At the Academy, Marilyn was selected Employee of the Year. She took her training to the Navajo, Laguna, and Acoma Indian Reservations in northwest New Mexico before retiring to Ponca City. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Marilyn served as an Elder and sang in the choir.

There will be a graveside ceremony at Eddy New Home Cemetery at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory, 505 W Grand Ave, Ponca City, OK 74601.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Eddy Cemetery Association, c/o Carissa Blevins, Treasurer, 3000 SW 62nd St., Oklahoma City, OK 73159.
