James (Jim) B. Gilbert of Vero Beach, Florida died Monday , July 6, 2020 at Palm Garden Nursing Center of Vero Beach, Florida. He was 73.

Jim was born April 22,1947 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He was the son of Dr. John B. Gilbert and June Davis Gilbert.

Jim graduated from Ponca City High School in 1965 where he was a varsity basketball player. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1969. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi.

Jim worked for many years as manager in the citrus industry in both Florida and the Bahamas. He enjoyed that industry as it allowed him to work with many types of people and with land development. He always said he learned a lot about land development from his grandfather who was a farmer in Crescent, Oklahoma.

Jim was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing in his spare time. He also enjoyed fishing. He had a love of animals and particular fond memories of his horse Maggie and his cat Bits.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria Fleet Gilbert of Vero Beach, two brothers, John P. Gilbert (Laurel) of Edmond, Dr. Tim Gilbert (Kathy) of Ponca City, and one sister, Susan Taffoni (Joe) of Chapin, SC. He also survived by 6 nephews and two nieces and 3 great nephews and 2 great nieces.

He was predeceased by his father, Dr. John B. Gilbert, and grandfathers Mr. Henry Simmering, and Dr. James B. Gilbert, mother, June D. Gilbert and step mothers Jodie Gilbert, grandmothers, Opal M. Simmering and Edna Ruth Gilbert and one niece, Julia K. Gilbert.

At Jim’s request he will be cremated and burial will be private.
