Traditionally, Thanksgiving is a time for gathering with family to celebrate the things we are thankful for, but this year COVID-19 casts its long shadow on the holiday season as it has with so many other aspects of life.

These end of the year holiday gatherings will undoubtedly increase the spread of the coronavirus, exacerbated by the presence of the flu and cold viruses and people gathering in large numbers in a single location. But there are some alternatives that will make the holidays safer and reduce the risk of COVID-19.

As always, the CDC recommended guidelines of mask wearing, washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and social distancing are scientifically shown to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Hosting a virtual dinner is an option that ensures you can share a meal together with family that live outside your home and keep all parties safe from the coronavirus.

If you want to host an inperson event, limit the number of attendees as much as possible and make sure that the guests wear masks when not eating or drinking.

Weather permitting, hosting a Thanksgiving dinner outdoors can lessen the spread of COVID-19. Alternatively, if forced indoors by weather, you can increase air ventilation by opening windows and doors or by having your central heating and air set on a continuous circulation. If you do travel, it is advisable to check restrictions before you go and to make sure you get a flu shot. Be sure to wear a mask in public settings and stay at least six feet apart from anyone who is not from your household. Also avoid touching your face mask, eyes, nose and mouth.

There are also ways to help make at risk family members such as seniors feel involved and a part of the festivities. Holiday greeting cards can help boost connectivity and holiday cheer amid the pandemic.
