Derek Griswold, 28 years old, was arrested on October 17th on the charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a Felony, and Obstruction and Resisting Arrest, both of which are misdemeanors.

According to the affidavit, Officer Bradley Vice of the Newkirk Police Department, received a call that someone was sleeping behind their house. Upon arrival, Officer Vice located the subject laying in the grass between the railroad tracks and the house in Newkirk.

The affidavit states that the officer spoke with him, confirmed his identity as Derek Griswold through his identification and ran his name with The Sheriff’s Department and determined that Griswold was in fact related to the caller’s boyfriend. The caller let Officer Vice know that it would be fine for Griswold to stay outside until his relative, her boyfriend, got home from work. The officer left and there were no issues at that point.

The affidavit states that at 7:35 p.m. Griswold’s grandmother then called in to report that her grandson was threatening her and her family members with a knife. As the officer was getting written statements from all the family members, Newkirk Police were at the same location from earlier with Griswold and he was being held at gunpoint this time.

According to the affidavit, Officer Watters drew his taser and Officer Smith had his service weapon drawn and activated his pistol flashlight. Griswold was refusing to comply with verbal commands by the officers and they had to pull him off the hammock and off the porch and then handcuff him. The affidavit states Griswold was then placed into Officer Smith’s patrol car, a knife was removed from his person and he was transported to the Kay County Jail.

The affidavit also states that Griswold had threatened to stab and cut his family members and also stated that he would try to commit suicide by cop. Griswold was not compliant with the officers when they had arrived and he was lying on the hammock with the knife on his chest. According to the affidavit upon his arrest, officers collected two knives and a pair of utility pliers. He repeatedly yelled for officers to shoot him in the head during the arrest and as he was being transported to jail, he completely denied everything that had just happened.

Derek Griswold’s bond was set at $100,000 and he is scheduled to appear for an Initial Appearance in Kay County District Court on October 30th.
