ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Arkansas City Police Department arrested two Ponca City juveniles on Sunday on suspicion of stealing from multiple unlocked vehicles.

The two 14-year-old boys are accused of burglary of a motor vehicle, consumption of alcohol by a minor, criminal damage to property, criminal trespass and theft from a motor vehicle, as well as both curfew and tobacco violations.

They were taken into custody for processing and released into the custody of parents or guardians.

Officers were dispatched early Sunday morning after a citizen called 911 to report two juveniles carrying a flashlight and looking at a vehicle in the area of North Third Street and West Chestnut Avenue.

The caller provided a description of both suspects and their direction of travel away from the area.

When police arrived, they observed the two suspects in the area of Fifth Street and West Central Avenue, but then briefly lost sight of them. Shortly after, an officer saw the suspects running across West Chestnut Avenue on North Fifth Street. Police stopped the boys in the 200 block of North Fifth Street.

Officers identified the two as Ponca City residents and found a large amount of coins on them, along with several other random items. They determined the boys had been going through unlocked vehicles.

Police attempted to contact the owners of vehicles in the neighborhood to determine if items had been taken from them without permission. They found nine vehicles with damage or stolen property.

“The Arkansas City Police Department asks that if your vehicle was accessed illegally, please call us at (620) 441-4444 so your information can be added to the report,” said Police Chief Dan Ward.
