Julie Higgins teaches 4th grade at Garfield Elementary and this is her first year in the district. Higgins is from Dighton, Kansas. She moved to Ponca City this year during the quarantine with her husband and daughter. She has been in education for 13 years and has taught middle school math, 2nd grade and 4th grade.

Higgins has several family members who have been teachers and her family wanted her to become a teacher, but Higgins wanted to go into business. After she met her husband, who was finishing his education degree at Oklahoma State and he had started teaching at a small school in Kansas where she was hired as an aide for two years, then decided to go back to school for Elementary Education.

“I have always enjoyed working with kids, so I guess I was destined to follow the footsteps of my family,” said Higgins.

Higgins’ favorite thing about teaching is seeing a child start to understand something that they had previously been struggling with.

“It is wonderful to see them start to gain confidence in their skills,” said Higgins. “That is when I feel like I am doing my job right.”

The philosophy Higgins takes to teaching is the belief that all children have to capacity to learn.

“Every child is unique and they just need support to get the best education possible for themselves,” said Higgins.
