Northern Oklahoma Flight Academy announces plans for 2023 flight camp

The Ponca City Aviation Booster Club will host their monthly fly-in breakfast on Saturday, March 4 from 7 am to 10 am.

The breakfast is held on the first Saturday of each month and the menu is a traditional buffet-style breakfast that includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, hash browns, fresh fruit, coffee and orange juice. Charge for the breakfast is $8 for adults and $4 for children. The breakfast menu will include: scrambled eggs, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, potatoes, sausage, bacon, hash browns, fresh fruit, coffee and orange juice. Soda or bottle water is $1 extra.

This event is also an opportunity to watch planes fly-in and take off from the airport as it is considered one of the largest fly-in breakfasts in the country. Planes come from many locations within a 100 mile radius of Ponca City such as Ardmore, Oklahoma City, Arkansas City, Coffeyville, Perry, Stillwater and more.

The breakfast is sponsored by the Ponca City Aviation Foundation, and the club works to try and get people, both young and old, interested in aviation and the airport. Funds raised through the breakfast are utilized to benefit youths in Ponca City through scholarships for high school seniors and providing for the Northern Oklahoma Flight Academy for the education of future pilots.

The Northern Oklahoma Flight Academy has announced details for their 2023 summer flight camp, with the classes beginning on June 12 and continuing onto July 21.

Week 1 (June 12-16, 2023) (tuition $200) will host three classes of different levels of students and topic emphasis. The classes are: Basic Aviation Technology (BAT) for grades 6-8, Advanced Aviation Technology (AAT) for grades 7-12 who have already had BAT or equivalent and Professional Drone Pilot (PDP) for grades 8-12 for those who have a casual interest in drones or who wish to eventually obtain a license (age 16) and begin a commercial drone business.

Week 2 (June 19-23, 2023) (tuition $200) will host one class of students in grades 8-12 and will be called Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT). This class seeks students interested in the amazing federally licensed field of construction, inspection, and maintenance of airplanes and rotorcraft such as airliners, military aircraft, and commercial aircraft such as private jets and all other flying machines. The shortage of people in this field rivals the shortage of pilots everyone hears about and is equally important.

Week 3 (June 26-30, 2023) (tuition $200) will host one class of students in grades 8-12 and will be called Professional Pilot Training (PPT). This class seeks students who have an interest in being the pilots of the aircraft mentioned in all the paragraphs above. An airplane ride is planned but all else is ground school.

Week 4 (July10-14, 2023) (tuition $300) will host students who are 15 years old or older and have taken the previous classes (or equivalent) and wish to actually take flying lessons in an airplane but have taken no flying lessons yet. This includes two 1-hour flying lessons, a beginning ground school session, and a class in aircraft systems as well as construction and flight of a radio controlled model airplane and instruction using computer simulator flights. More flying lessons should be available at actual Academy cost if weather permits.

Week 5 (July 17-21, 2023)(tuition $300) will host the students 15 or older who have taken some flying lessons before and covers the same topics as Week 4 above except all are more advanced. Again, two flying lessons are included in the tuition with more possible at actual academy cost if weather permits.

Registration for the classes is open now and will close on Friday, March 31.
