When the table is laden with mashed potatoes, casseroles, turkey, ham, prime rib, pumpkin pie and red velvet cake, it can be confusing to determine which traditional holiday foods can support good health. While Thanksgiving may be behind us, there will be other times to gather with family and friends during the holiday season.

But if you see physical, emotional or cognitive signs that they’re not able to take care of themselves the way they once were, it’s important to speak up. This could happen while you’re at their home or after you’ve visited them for the holidays.

Zesty Whole Grain Salad

INGREDIENTS 2 cups whole grain (brown rice, Kamut™, quinoa) 2 tablespoons oil (canola or vegetable) 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon honey Salt and ground black pepper to taste 2 apples, chopped 1/2 cup nuts, chopped (pecans, walnuts) 1/2 cup dried fruit (cranberries, cherries, raisins) 1 bunch kale or 10-ounce package spinach (about 6 cups)(torn into bite-size pieces) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cook whole grain according to package directions.
