Robert Joseph “Bobby” Swensen, Newkirk resident, died late Saturday night, Sept. 1, 2018 in the Select Specialty Hospital, Oklahoma City. He was 52.

The son of Skip Swensen and Charlotte Leona Robinson Swensen, Robert was born December 1, 1965 in Ponca City. He grew up and received his education in Tahlequah.

In 1987 Bobby moved to Arkansas City and was employed by Gilliland Printing. In 2001 he moved to Newkirk. The following year he was in a bad vehicular accident and had to be on disability for a time.

On June 18, 2005 Robert and Tammy June Maharrey were married in Tahlequah. They made their home in Newkirk where they have since resided.

He attended Central Tech Truck Drivers Training in Drumwright, receiving his CDL. He then drove for River Ridge Construction, Sooner Oil Company, and Blue Sky Oil Company. He retired in 2016, unable to continue working because of the long term effects of the injuries he sustained in the 2002 accident.

Robert enjoyed Raiders football and was an avid Harley rider. He relished western movies, and he loved blues music. He enjoyed wrestling and watching his son and then nephews wrestle. When advice was needed, he was the person everyone in the family would go to, knowing it would be good advice. If you needed help, he would be there, no matter the time day or night. If he called you brother, you knew he truly saw you as his brother. Most of all he loved his children and grandchildren and enjoyed them immensely.

Robert is survived by his wife, Tammy, of the home; their children, Aimee Swensen, of Tahlequah and Johathan and Brandi Buchanan, of Ponca City; his father, Skip Swensen ,of Sheriden, Ore.; his step-father, William Stopp, of Tahlequah; his siblings, Bryan Page of Ponca City, Jason Stopp of Ashland, Okla., Nathan Stopp, of Edmond and Shawna Swain, of Winfield; three grandchildren, Liam Coats, Mason Coats and Serenity Buchanan; numerous nephews, nieces and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother, Jesse Hoyt.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Friday, Sept. 7 in the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk with the Rev. Mike Parish of Tahlequah officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Kaw City. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. The casket will be open only at the church following the service.

Those serving as casket bearers will be nephews, Briar Stopp, Bleau Stopp, Braxton Stopp, Bradyn Keltner, Colton Stopp and Jacob Stopp. Honorary bearers will be his brothers, Bryan Page, Jason Stopp and Nathan Stopp.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Robert Swensen’s name to the Newkirk Wrestling Program. These may be mailed to Newkirk High School, 625 W. South St., Newkirk 74647.
