JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Johnie “Jack” Glenn Cathey, 80 crossed the bar Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017. He was born May 20, 1937, in Tonkawa, the son of John and Francis “Fannie” Rhoda Cathey. Jack grew up in Tonkawa as a young boy. He graduated from Tonkawa High School and joined the U.S. Navy as a young man. He lived in Jacksonville, Fla., since 1956, served the U.S. Coast Guard as a Boatswain’s Mate Master Chief Petty Officer and was a past president of the The Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association for 25 plus years.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary; son, Glenn Cathey (Linda); daughters, Venita Rainey, Vaneta Mock, Karen Trone, Elizabeth Lowary (Carl) and Denise Tronenine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Sisters, Ona Belle Watson, Josephine Williamson, of Oklahoma, and Madeline Williamson of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers and sisters, Lewis Cathey, Marshall Cathey, Louise Yeager, Margurette Hudkins, Jim Cathey and Betty Cremers.
A funeral service was held Friday, Dec. 22 at 12 p.m. at Dunns Creek Baptist Church, 1425 Starratt Road in Jacksonville where he was a member with the Rev. Steve Leggett officiating. Burial with military honored followed in Jacksonville National Cemetery, under the direction of the Cedar Bay Funeral Home, 405 New Berlin Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
