John Lester Hough, Newkirk resident, died early Sunday morning, April 7, 2019 at his home. He was 87.
The son of Lester John and Juna Maye ( Marshall) Hough, John was born Sept. 6, 1934 in Cowley County, Kansas. He grew up on the family farm in the rural Arkansas City area and attended Martha Washington Rural School. He then attended Arkansas City High School. Following high school graduation, he attended Arkansas City Junior College for a year. In Nov. 1952 he entered the United States Army and later was transferred to the Army Reserves. On March 5, 1962 he received his Honorable Discharge from the army. On Aug. 6, 1958 John and Dolores Carrier Gentry were married in Arkansas City. They established their first home in Arkansas City. Later they lived in Marland, Ponca City and Newkirk. Mrs. Hough died July 14, 2015.
John’s work history includes farming, employment with Mauer-Neuer in Arkansas City, and over the road truck driver. He retired in 2002 from Noble County. He enjoyed woodworking in his spare time.
John is survived by two children, Mark L. and Ruth Ann Hough of Fruita, Colo., and Romona Van Eck of Sacramento, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Johnny “Buck” Hough of Ponca City, and B.J. Lewis Hough of Colorado Springs. In addition to his wife, Dolores, John was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Lee Hough; his parents; and a granddaughter, Kasie B. Hough
Cremation has been effected under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. There have been no services planned for John Hough, although a memorial fund has been established with Hospice of North Central Oklahoma. Contributions may be sent in his name to 445 Fairview Ave, Ponca City 74601-1923.
