Homer Lee Duke Jr.

Homer Lee Duke Jr., longtime Newkirk resident and formerly of Ponca City, died Tuesday, March 12, 2019 in Alliance Health Ponca City. He was 82.

The son of Homer Lee Duke, Sr. and Hattie Marie (Linn) Duke, Homer was born Nov. 17, 1936 in Blackwell. When he was 6 years old, his dad died in Kern Co. Calif. Young Homer began school in Donora, Penn. where his family found work at the steel mill. Later, they relocated back to Oklahoma where he attended school in Ponca City. He played baseball with a Ponca City semi-pro team for a short time.

In 1956 Homer and Patricia Owsley were married in Ponca City, and they had five children.

Homer joined the National Guard where he was honorably discharged in 1959 as Staff Sergeant. Homer worked as a truck driver and roofer for a short time before joining the City of Ponca City Street Department. He retired as superintendent after over 40 years of service to the city. He also worked a second job as Assistant Manager for Video Theaters which owned the Poncan and Capri Theaters and, the Airline and Skyiew Drive-In Theaters in Ponca City.

In 1981 Homer and Willetta Cline Ford were married in Newkirk where they have made their home since.

Homer was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk. He and Willetta enjoyed the Annual Cline Family cross-country vacations. Homer drove the large van from Florida to California to Washington state. He had a great sense of humor and was just a little bit ornery. He loved to fish, hunt and watch western movies. He loved his family, and his family loved him.

Homer is survived by his wife, Willetta; his chldren, Benjamin and Cari (Loving) Duke of Oklahoma City, Barry and Lisa (Larimer) Duke and B. Gail Duke, all of Ponca City, Mark and Linda (Virden) Ford, and Perry Ford, all of Newkirk; Jerry and Toni (Ford) Yorke of Tulsa; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Brenda (Duke) Martin in 2018 and Cheri Ann Duke in 1959.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 15 in the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk with the Rev. Susan Rice officiating. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. The body will lie in state at the funeral home Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.. The family will be available at the funeral home to visit with friends from 6-8 p.m.

Those serving as casket bearers will be Jason Parson, Robert Parson, Jake Martin, Lee Duke Johnpaul Donelson and Tyler Ford. Honorary bearers will be Kaideon Mauk, Rick Rouse, Tommy Morgan, Jr., Colin Ford and Terry Ford.
