Bernadine Barry Allen

Bernadine Barry Allen, 72, of Stillwater, died peacefully on May 31, 2018. A visitation will be held Thursday, June 7, from 6-9 p.m. at Strode Funeral Home, 610 S. Duncan, Stillwater.

Bernadine was born on March 25, 1946, in Ponca City, to her parents, Vivian (Wake Barry Mack Beaubien) and Clyde Barry. She graduated from Ponca City High School in 1964 and later earned a diploma in Nursing in 1967 from Bass Memorial Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, Enid; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1988 from Saint Mary’s of the Plains College, Dodge City, Kan. and a Master of Healthcare Administration in 1999 from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater.

Bernadine devoted her career to improving the quality of care for patients, medical compliance for physicians and accreditation standards for Hillcrest Hospital Cushing (formerly Cushing Regional Hospital), retiring in 2009 after 23 years of employment and several awards for distinguished service. Prior to this, she instructed aspiring nursing students at Meridian Technology Center, Stillwater. She was an experienced nurse, teacher and caretaker. She took pride in being part of the fraternity of nurses and was dedicated to her profession.

For many years, as a baptized believer in Christ, she taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church, Stillwater. She enjoyed sewing, puzzles, reading and beating her opponent in games.

She is best remembered for her fierce love of family, inspiring members to be their best. This was modeled by her pursuit of higher education and hard work in the medical field. She was known to give impromptu dance lessons, beauty and dating advice and instruction on driving stick-shift cars. She was the life of any party and loved to laugh with family and friends. Bernadine worked hard to make a difference in her own life and made a point to mentor those around her. She was most proud of the success of her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her devoted and loving husband, Lyle Allen, of 44 years; daughter, Amy (Jonathan) Boyd, of Huntsville, Ala.; son, Jon Allen, of Austin, Texas; sister, Tina (Vince) Scoufos, of Afton; sister, Tammy (Lance) McHenry, of Oklahoma City; brother, Ted (Carol Kimes), of Oklahoma City; grandson, Matthew Boyd and granddaughter, Zadie Boyd, both of Huntsville, Ala. and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Karman Legacy Hospice, 915 S. Main Street, Stillwater; the Laurene A. Opdyke Nursing Scholarship Fund, in care of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, 1000 N. Broadway, Oklahoma City, OK 73102 or the charity of your choice.
