ARKANSAS CITY — Putting together an enjoyable show for all ages, Cowley College’s Act One Drama Club recently performed a musicalized version of the movie Elf in the Robert Brown Theatre.
The musical was based on the New Line Cinema film written by David Berenbaum and the book by Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin.
Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawled into Santa’s bag of gifts and was transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf was raised, unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth.
With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarked on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity.
Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list and that his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy was determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.
“This production was definitely a whirlwind following almost immediately on the heels of Night Must Fall, but was definitely worth the time and commitment especially when we got to perform for the children,” Cowley College theatre director Nick Albrecht said. “We saw over 2,500 elementary students from across our service area and into Oklahoma coming to us at the Robert Brown Theatre. It was such a delight to see them respond to this show and to see them run to Buddy, Jovie, and Santa afterwards.”
Cowley’s two Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship nominees were Lucas Griffith as Buddy and Jeannie Qualls as Charlotte Dennon/Ensemble. They will now join the ranks of Caleb Parish and Cassidy Harriger to go compete at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Region 5 Festival for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship.
