TONKAWA With junior running back Jake Love leading the way, the Tonkawa Buccaneers whipped up on the Foyil Panthers 41-6 Friday in the opening round of the Class A playoffs.
Love ran for four touchdowns in the game, the shortest of which was 15 yards. His other TD runs were 85, 49 and 60 yards in length.
Love carried the ball only 12 times, but registered 226 yards in rushing for the game.
Meanwhile, the Tonkawa defense was doing its thing, and held Foyil to 53 yards rushing. Foyil's leading ground gainer before Friday was Kris Miller. The Tonkawa defense held Miller to nine yards on seven carries.
The leading rusher for Foyil was quarterback Haskell Patton, who picked up 36 yards on 14 carries.
Before the game, Foyil coach Jesse Leigh described the Panthers as a team that prefers to run. Friday, they just couldn't get anything going on the ground against the Bucs.
Patton, who had passed for 450 yards during the regular season did complete 10 passes during the game for 127 yards. But Patton wasn't very efficient in the passing game, putting the ball in the air 26 times.
As has been usually the case, Tonkawa scored on its first possession. Love scored from the 15 with 7:11 remaining in the first quarter. The play that set up his TD run was a 31-yard pass from D. J. Bishop to Chris Richardson.
Tonkawa lost the ball on a fumble at the Bucs' 28-yard line giving Foyil an excellent opportunity to punch the ball in the end zone. But the Panthers used seven plays to move the ball 13 yards and gave up possession on loss of downs.
On the next play Love wove his way through the Foyil defense to score on an 85-yard carry.
Love got the only other first half touchdown on a 49-yard run. On this possession, Tonkawa took over at its 24. Kramer Simpson ran it 27 yards, and that was followed by a 49-yard scamper by Love.
The half ended with Tonkawa in front 20-0.
In the second half, Simpson scored from 5 yards out with 3:20 remaining in the third quarter. That was the only touchdown of the period.
In the fourth quarter, Bishop and Richardson connected through the airways for a 14-yard touchdown.
Foyil struck with its only score on the next series of plays. The Panthers moved from their own 23 to score in nine plays. Dillon Noland ran one yard for the TD.
It took Tonkawa only three plays to score again. It was Love's turn again and he burst loose for a 60-yarder. Cody Bess made the last of his five extra points in the game to form the final score at 41-6.
Foyil had lost only twice before Friday's encounter, to Afton and to Commerce. The Panthers season ended with their record at 8-3.
Tonkawa remains unbeaten in 11 games and will host Stratford (7-4) next week in the second round of the playoffs.
