Performance at PC Library Set Friday

Mike Pahsetopah of the Dancing Eagle Troupe will perform in the Program Room at Ponca City Library at 1 p.m. Friday.

Attired in Native American costume, Pahsetopah's dance performance is about a lot more than just glitter and flash. He is very accomplished at representing the Native American legends through steps and movement. The dances, according to Pahsetopah, often represent Native American stories. His demonstrations include Oklahoma style fancy dancing, hoop dancing, eagle dance and friendship social dancing. His wife Lisa demonstrates the women's two step and the fancy shawl dance.

Following the famous world champion fancy dancer George "Woogie" Watchetaker when he was just a toddler, Pahsetopah mastered the old ways of ceremonial dancing when he was still very young. He competed in ceremonial dance competition, winning top honors while still a teenager.

Pahsetopah's heritage includes the Osage, Yuchi, and Creek tribes.

For the past 18 years, Pahsetopah has owned and operated the Dancing Eagle Troupe to demonstrate and teach Native American dancing. His wife Lisa is also an accomplished instructor in the women's dance steps. Together, they demonstrate and involve the audience in several of the beginning steps. Their youngest daughter, Heaven is also a part of the dancing troupe. Their son Mike is the drummer for the ceremonial dance demonstrations.

The Dancing Eagle Troupe program is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Oklahoma Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Friends of the Ponca City Library, and the City of Ponca City. Anyone over the age of 5 will especially enjoy learning about Native American ceremonial dancing from Pahsetopah and the Dancing Eagle Troupe.
