School Preview Night Planned for Tuesday |
|
The Ponca City Alternative School has scheduled abstinence and HIV/AIDS education classes to be presented by the school nurse consultant.
A parent preview night has been set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Alternative School, 1615 North Seventh Street.
Classroom sessions will be held at various times during the school year and may include a variety of speakers or school personnel. Parents are invited and encouraged to join their child in attending these classes, Public Information Coordinator Mary Ladd said.
The goal of these classes is to help students gain an understanding of abstinence and HIV/AIDS, Ladd said. Objectives include promoting positive attitudes about the changes of puberty, understanding the choice of abstinence, identifying the concepts of personal rights, decision making and feelings as they relate to sex and sexuality, identify sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS, and responsibilities of youth who may become sexually active.
Discussions of self-respect, goals and expectations, choices and consequences as they relate to abstinence and HIV/AIDS will be presented. Videos and slides pertaining to Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV/AIDS will also be viewed by the students, Ladd said.
Parents who do not want their children to attend must sent a note with the parent's signature to the office or science teacher. Published Sun, Nov 8, 2009, On Page 2 A Copyright ©1998-2010 The Ponca City News |
