Ponca City Good Neighbor Day Proved To Be Success

On Saturday, 25 volunteers participated in Ponca City Good Neighbor Day. Volunteers from the Chamber of Commerce, United Way AmeriCorps, RSVP, and community members worked two shifts to help make Ponca City a cleaner and healthier place to live. The goal of the Ponca City Good Neighbor Day Advisory Council is to promote a lifestyle of community service and neighborly care within Ponca City.

With the assistance of the City of Ponca City's solid waste division, houses of four seniors as well as areas at Kygar Road and Fifth Street were targeted.

"Many low-income senior home owners have no family (or funds) to help them with yard work, debris clean-up, and getting large items to the curb or alleyway," said Jeff Seymour, Good Neighbor Day coordinator and Ponca City Development Authority staff member."

"This is just the beginning of the Good Neighbor Day activities. The next step," continues Seymour, "is the Ponca City Good Neighbor Housing Scholarship Program to assist Ponca City residents with function — handrails, entry and access into a home — and appearance — painting, debris removal — improvements to their property." Applicants to the scholarship program are asked to fill out an application for assistance at the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce. Applications will be considered for approval by the Ponca City Good Neighbor Advisory Council. Stop by the Chamber at 420 E. Grand Avenue or call 765-4400.

Volunteers were treated to lunch cooked by Chuck Clark and Marlene and Wayne Foxworthy and water and drinks donated by the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce. For more information about the Ponca City Good Neighbor Day program contact Jeff Seymour at 716-8703 or e-mail at jseymour@goponca.com.
