Wildcat Golfers 10th In State Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY — Ponca City's Wildcat golfers couldn't repeat the success they enjoyed during the first day of the Class 6A Boys' State Tournament, falling to a 10th place finish Tuesday at Lincoln Park.

The Wildcats shot 321 as a team in Tuesday's round to finish with a 940 total for the 54-hole tournament. They were three-strokes back of ninth-place Edmond Memorial.

Edmond North won the state championship with an 872 total, beating defending champion Jenks by four strokes. Edmond Santa Fe, the first-day leader, slipped to third at 883 with Putnam City North fourth at 825. The rest of the field was far behind.

"We just couldn't get anything going," coach Jerry Orr said of the final 18 holes of play, after the Poncans had shot 306 and 313 on Monday.

But Orr couldn't be to disappointed.

"To be one of the top 10 teams out of 32 Class 6A team in not bad," he said.

Orr had a relatively young team this year and will lose just two seniors with a number of good young players coming up from the junior high team.

Unfortunately, one of those seniors will be Chris Greenwood, who paced the team all season. Greenwood won the Putnam City North Tournament a few weeks ago and had six rounds of under-par scoring this season, Orr noted

Greenwood was 11th in the individual scoring with 73-73-74—220 for the tournament. Union's Steve Carney was the state individual champion with a 208 total. Will Kropp, Edmond North, was second at 211.

Wildcat Ben Kline shot 75-80-78—233, Mark Maddux 79-77-89—245, Daniel Ebbert 79-83-92—254 and Alan Moriarty 82-93-80—255.
